An atheists prayer.

Post by Closeyclo »

Haunted by ghosts from a tortured past.
This atheist resorts to prayer at last.
It makes no sense, I cannot see.
The use in begging a deity.
But the road is reaching a cold, dead end.
And on this lonely path I feel no friend.
So if I die before I wake.
I pray the Lord my soul to take.
But before you take it where you will.
Take away the memories I hold still.
Don't let me walk again through hell.
Let me forget the times I fell.
I do not want to last the night.
I pray you bring me into light.
Don't let my words fall on deaf ears.
I beg of you, release me from my fears.
I am so tired, so weak, so small.
Please take me far away from it all.
An atheist, resorting to this prayer.
If there's a heaven please lead me there.
I'm tired. I'm done. I want to sleep.
I pray the Lord, my soul to keep.
A champion is defined not by their wins but by how they can recover when they fall.

this resounded with me
but i am not atheist.
my heart believes
my head has questions...
because i have been so deeply hurt by those
in the church (not ra related, personally)
but also, deeply helped by them
i was rescued by the ministers wife
well he helped too, in his quiet way.
anyway, thanks for your beautiful poem
it touched me deeply
i related to it

Beautiful. And I relate. When I was a child I would pray to God to take me to heaven. I didn’t want to “last the night” either. Now I am atheist. Or maybe agnostic. I think there is something but no organized religion for me. I feel it in nature.
So well written.

I pray an athiest's prayer almost every other day now. :)

There's something innately comforting about a god (any god, really) who might reach down to help you through your toughest times, or to relieve you from a persistent pain. I was once a part of the christian church, and that's what i miss the most: confidence in something good, something stronger than you, something that will give you favor and hope for a better life.

This post was made awhile ago, and I hope you are doing okay now, OP. It sounds like you were pleading for an escape from your life, and I hope that you were able to find the help and support you needed to keep walking through hell until you were on the other side of it.

Wishing you all the best.
