Re: Swallowed by sadness
Hi Crow,
Thank you for checking up, I'm going to try not to apologize for not responding or.being active. But you know what I mean.
I'm having a really hard time, every day seems to bring something new. Today I am dealing with grief, which is something I've not really dealt with before. I'm not sure how I feel about it.
I was having a conversation with my best friends girlfriend and she was talking about valentine's and what they are up to. I don't really do valentine's but each to their own, some people really enjoy it.
But it made me realise the last valentine's I celebrated, was with someone who commited suicide June last year. I never really gave it much thought if I'm honest. This would have been in around 2014/2015.
I feel tired.
I hope everyone's okay, I'm thinking of you all and come here everyday to see what's been posted.

I’m so sorry Nell. I, too, have lost some very beloved friends to suicide. Valentine’s Day is not one I’ve ever liked, even when I’ve had a partner. I find it so triggering and icky for some reason. I hope you find peace and comfort this weekend! Just wanted to say I’m here, listening and caring.

Hi Nelll
Here listening and thoughts are with you. I know the feeling of being down and it seems the hard knocks just keep coming. It will pass. Will send as many positive vibes as I can.

Oh wow Nelll, that is tough. Grief is a horrible thing. Especially if it's grief that hadn't previously been acknowledged. I don't really have anything helpful to say other than to just look after yourself and let yourself feel whatever you need to feel.
And no need to apologise at all for not being active here - there's no expectations.

Nelll,
I'm sorry you're feeling so sad. All I can say, as already mentioned here, is that it will pass. I know it's not much comfort when you're right in the middle of it but it's all that comes to mind, and it's not just a saying, it's true. By now, I know that when something sad or bad happens to me, it takes a few days to calm down and become kind of less sharp and painful. Our brain does take care of that. And, anyway, you know we're all here if you feel like talking.

Chessgirl, I am so sorry to hear you have felt loss in this manner too.
I'm sorry also you feel funny about valentine's too, although it is nice to have someone understand my feelings towards it. How you have explained it is exactly how I feel. It's hard to put my finger on it.. just icky.
I hope you are having a good week
Eagle, thank you so much. I spent some time grieving and I think peace is certainly around the corner when it comes to this. It's always going to be sad when someone undeserving of death, leaves his planet. I hope you're well.
Crow, your right. It's a strange feeling when you suddenly start to grieve without doing so before. But on the other hand I suppose it's a coping mechanism, Ive been known to push things down as far as they can untill they erupt.
Your support is more than helpful, without lots of words - so thank you. I hope you're having a good day, it's raining where I am but I don't mind the rain. I hope you've got some good bird gazing in.
Kokoschka, thank you so much for your support. You're completely right in the fact it will pass. I'm glad I have everyone here for those times it feels impossible. I hope whatever your doing and wherever you are, you're feeling okay today.
I'm so thankful for you all.

Hey Nelll,
Raining here too...
Just got the odd handful of Starlings popping into the garden in between breaks in the rain (which is hardly at all right now).
Hope you have a good day.

Hi Crow,
You have inspired me to buy a bird table. which I did over the weekend, I just need to get some bird feed..
I love wildlife and all things outdoors. My dad and I used to always watch the birds flying around the fields where he lives. It's quite rural there.
Looking forward to future bird sights!

Re: Swallowed by sadness
Hey Nelll,
Ah that sounds great! I really find it very relaxing watching the birds. We currently have a list of 17 bird species that have visited our back garden.
We are very new to it as we have only had a garden for five months, but here's what we have discovered...
(We don't have a bird table as yet though.)
Hang bird feeders near cover, but out of the reach of any cats or potential ambush sites. Make sure that any food is replaced after a few days if it remains on your table so that it doesn't get mouldy. Same applies to feeders - generally only put out food that will get eaten in a few days. Clean feeders and table weekly with a bird safe disinfectant, and soak the feeders in mild soapy water to clean. (Got to avoid birds getting and passing on diseases.)
Make sure there is a water source in your garden - that will bring the birds in... either a bird bath, pond or just a small dish will do.
The more shrubs and trees the better!
Our garden literally has a small patio and turf. No plants, no trees, nothing to entice birds... nothing to entice bugs, and as a result, the birds. (Fortunately our neighbours have decently planted gardens which helps.) As we rent we have to probably look at pot plants and shrubs, but with the current unemployment and benefits on hold, we can't afford it.
Our feeding station consists of a three hooked pole in the lawn which is ten foot or so away from the windows (make sure it is at least that distance away, or within three foot of windows to avoid bird collisions with the windows), and six foot away from the fence (there are cats that patrol the fences). We have a mesh feeder which had peanuts in (but the birds didn't touch them) but now has berry suet pellets in. We have a four port Sunflower hearts feeder, and a Fat Ball feeder. In time we will do the garden up and get more feeders and a table.
It may take anything from a few days to six weeks for birds to discover and trust a new source of food, so patience may be needed! (It only took a week for us.)
With regard to the bird table, just make sure that if you put peanuts on it during nesting season, make sure they are chopped or crushed so that baby birds don't choke.
I hope that wasn't too lecture like... it's certainly not concise advice. And if you didn't want that, just ignore!
